Looking back on the Gonzaga basketball week ending January 23, 2016.

The Gonzaga Bulldogs played two games this past week.  The first was a 70-67 loss to St. Mary’s in Moraga. The second was a 71-61 win against Pacific in Stockton.

In the game against St. Mary’s, Gonzaga continued its trend of giving up big leads and losing. Domantas Sabonis continues to be excellent on the glass, hauling in 13 rebounds. He also put up 17 points and dished out seven assists. Sabonis has been Gonzaga’s best player by far in the past couple of weeks. His rebounding is solid, his scoring is consistent, and his passing is improving.  In the game at Pacific, Sabonis had 12 points, 20 rebounds, and two assists. His domination on the boards sets him apart from his competition in the WCC.

Eric McClellan has had a great stretch of games. Against St. Mary’s he had 23 points, six rebounds, and three assists.  Against Pacific he had 19 points and a rebound. McClellan has been stepping up as a third scorer for the Zags. This opens things up for the big men down low.

Kyle Wiltjer struggled in the St. Mary’s game with only six points, but he turned things around against Pacific with 23 points and six rebounds.  Wiltjer did not look inspired in the St. Mary’s game.  He was slow coming up the court and looked tired for most of the game. This improved in the Pacific game.  He is still a top player in the NCAA and not many players in the WCC can defend his array of moves.

Ryan Edwards has improved over the past few weeks.  His numbers are not spectacular, but he is making good decisions and giving Mark Few the ability to rest Sabonis and Wiltjer a little bit more each game.
