Kansas Basketball: Ranking the Jayhawks’ 12 Big 12-winning teams
3. 2010-11 (35-3, 14-2 Big 12)
Take two devastating post player like the Morris twins, surround them with a decent point guard in Tyshawn Taylor, and two “three and d” guys on the wing in Brady Morningstar and Tyrel Reed, and you have the perfect recipe for one of the best offenses in the country.
Thankfully, Morningstar and Reed transformed into the players they were, because their prized freshman, Josh Selby, transformed into a non-factor come March. After being ineligible for November and much of December, Selby made his debut on December 18 to the tune of 21 points, including this game-winning three in a 70-68 win over USC.
Of course, that ended up being Selby’s career high in a Kansas uniform. He was effective until early February, averaging 12 points per game and shooting over 43 percent from three. Then he got injured, sat out a few games, and averaged just 14 minutes per game and shot just 21 percent from three upon his return, and bolted for the NBA immediately upon season’s end.
So that was an interesting storyline, but the team always seemed better without him. They were undefeated heading into a showdown at Allen Fieldhouse with 10th ranked Texas in January, but blew a 12 point halftime lead in what was an emotional game for the team after finding out about the tragic death of Thomas Robinson’s mother just the night before, ending their 69-game home winning streak.
But nonetheless, led by the Morris twins, they would go on to lose just one more conference game to Kansas State, and won the conference outright after Tristan Thompson and Texas lost three out of their last four regular season games, then avenged the end of their home winning streak in the Big 12 Tournament Championship with a wire to wire 83-75 victory over the Longhorns.
