5. Kelvin Sampson

Houston head coach Kelvin Sampson was born in North Carolina and played college basketball at UNC Pembroke in the 1970s. He hasn’t coached in his home state and he has done an excellent job in Houston, but this could be an intriguing jump to the next level.

The Cougars don’t receive much recognition in the AAC, however, they are a tough, physical team that plays good defense and is aggressive on offense. This could be a solid formula for an NC State team that lacked heart, desire and all-out intensity for 40 minutes this season.

Adding a former player and a North Carolina native to the program would be a nice hire in the ACC.
