NC State Basketball: Five potential replacements for Mark Gottfried
4. Will Wade
Since taking over for Shaka Smart at VCU, Will Wade has done a terrific job of keeping the Rams’ culture and high level of play. Wade, who is in his second season as the head coach of the Rams, is 45-16 overall and has lost only six games in league play. He led the Rams to the second round of the NCAA Tournament last season, where they nearly knocked off an eventual Final Four team (Oklahoma), and was an assistant under Smart during the program’s Final Four run in 2011.
If Wade wants to make a leap to a Power 5 Conference, NC State is an opening in the ACC and would spur even more national attention for himself and his players.
However, with the stability that VCU currently has and the instability that NC State has, it would be a bit shocking if Wade actually opted to leave Richmond, VA. Regardless, expect the Wolfpack to put out feelers and try to extend top dollar to one of the elite mid-major coaches in college basketball.
