Georgetown basketball continues to head in the wrong direction as they are now losing their top recruit for the class of 2017.

Just when you think it couldn’t get worst for the Georgetown Hoyas, it did. Days after their season-ending loss to St. John’s in the Big East Tournament, Tremont Waters, a top 50 prospect from Connecticut, has asked Georgetown to be released from his scholarship. This is another crushing blow to a Georgetown team that has struggled all season and it adds more pressure to head coach John Thompson III.

After the bad season that Georgetown had, there was some hope for next season with the addition of the highly touted point guard. However, the recent struggles may have influenced Waters to re-open his recruitment.

Waters made his commitment to the Hoyas and did sign a letter of intent. Once he is released from his letter of intent, there will be a host of schools looking to recruit him for his services. Waters is now the third top available point guard in the class of 2017, according to Adam Zagoria of Zagsblog. No.1 point guard Trevon Duval and The Patrick School (NJ) point guard Jordan Walker are the other two.

It’s possible that the other schools that recruited Waters will show interest. Waters had schools such as Connecticut, Kentucky, Kansas and Indiana in his top five before making his commitment to the Hoyas.

The question going forward is does this finally mean that Thompson’s days are numbered at Georgetown? Trying to get your team to play well and win games is one thing but when you add the recruiting struggles, there will even be more pressure on the Hoyas to make change
