2. California Golden Bears

Many people on the West Coast will point to the Cal Golden Bears as an example of supposed East Coast Bias. In fact, the western conferences produced only four at-large bids: Oregon, UCLA, USC and Saint Mary’s.

Cal was the next team to be considered but was ultimately left out in favor of more East Coast teams. Led by Ivan Rabb, the Golden Bears had a very successful record in non-conference play. They entered Pac-12 play with an 11-3 record and a 3-2 record against eventual tournament teams.

In conference play, Cal came in fifth with a 10-8 record. Five of those losses came against the top three teams, and the Golden Bears picked up one win against USC, the fourth Pac-12 team to receive a bid.

What people saying Cal got snubbed won’t tell you is that their winning record was a result of their 11-0 record against sub-150 teams. The reality was that the Golden Bears had a 10-12 record against the top 150, including a dismal 0-7 record against the top 25.

While Cal may be one of the top teams snubbed, there is a reason behind the drop to the NIT.
