March Madness: The five best shots of the Big Dance
By Connor Hope
5. Elijah Stewart (USC vs. SMU)
The first round of the 2017 NCAA Tournament was historically uneventful, with a majority of the games won by solid margins and very few upsets. In the best game of the first round, USC capped off a comeback effort against SMU with game-winning three-pointer.
After trailing SMU for the entire game, the Trojans took a small lead with two minutes left. The Mustangs, however, took the lead back less than 40 seconds later.
With 36.6 seconds remaining, Trojans guard Jordan McLaughlin found Elijah Stewart in the corner for the go-ahead three.
This shot proved to be the game-winner, as SMU was unable to score on its final two possessions. This was USC’s second comeback of the Big Dance — they came back to beat Providence in the First Four game.
USC would go on to lose their comeback effort against Baylor in the next round, but Stewart’s shot brought them further than anyone expected.
