March Madness: Ranking the college basketball national championship games across all three divisions
The North Carolina Tar Heels captured their third March Madness national title this century with a win over the Gonzaga Bulldogs on Monday night.
Every year since the early 1980s, the NCAA has crowned a total of six national basketball champions across its three divisions — D-I, D-II and D-III.
The NCAA handed out championship trophies to three men’s and three women’s teams in 2017, with the last going to the North Carolina Tar Heels on April 3.
Northwest Missouri State and Babson College joined UNC as men’s champions. South Carolina headlined the women’s national champions, with Ashland University and Amherst College also earning wins.
Of the six national champions, three were first-timers. Northwest Missouri State and Babson College are first-time champions on the men’s side while South Carolina was the women’s lone first-time winner.
While the NCAA championships are seen as the cream of the crop, there were several other teams that claimed postseason championships. The TCU Horned Frogs captured the NIT title with a win over Georgia Tech. In the meanwhile, Michigan outlasted Georgia Tech to win the WNIT.
The other postseason champions for the men were Saint Peter’s (CIT) and Wyoming (CBI).
