Memphis adds another first-team All-American recruit to the team in JuCo transfer Kyvon Davenport.

Memphis men’s basketball coach Tubby Smith received more good news Monday when JuCo player Kyvon Davenport signed a letter of intent to play for the Tigers.

Davenport, a forward from Georgia Highlands College in Rome, GA, had an All-American season for the Chargers, averaging 14.3 points and 9.3 boards per game in 35 games played this season. He was picked for the first team by the NJCAA.

Davenport helped lead Georgia Highlands to one loss in the regular season, but they fell 70-69 in the second round of the NJCAA Tournament to Motlow State.

It’s not the first All-American player that Memphis has picked up in recent weeks. The Tigers also announced the signing of Kareem Brewton April 12.

Brewton was a first team All-American guard at Eastern Florida State, averaging 19.9 points per game during the season.

Brewton helped lead Eastern Florida State to the NJCAA National Championship game as they lost 84-58 on March 25 to Hutchinson

Memphis has faced some rough times as of late, given the transfers of the Lawson brothers, Keon Clergeot, and Markel Crawford.

The loss of the Lawsons and Crawford ultimately led to Memphis losing its top three scorers to transfers. The Lawson brothers chose Kansas, while Crawford has yet to decide.

The additions of Davenport and Brewton are significant adds for Smith and Memphis. Both players can step in right away and contribute significantly.

With both players in the double-digits, it certainly helps boost the offense after the loss of the Lawsons and Crawford.

It might not be enough for the Tigers to just add those two. With SMU and Cincinnati looking strong again for next year — plus the addition of Wichita State — Memphis still has its challenges ahead.

Memphis finished the 2016-17 season with a 19-13 record and 9-9 in the AAC conference.
