Porter started his coaching career immediately after retiring as a player. He spent one season on the staff of the Sacramento Kings before being hired to lead the Milwaukee Bucks. Porter led the Bucks to a 41-41 record and a playoff berth in his first season. The Bucks went 30-52 in his second and final season.
Porter also had a 51 game head coach stint with Phoenix in 2008-09, posting a 28-23 record. In addition, Porter has served on the staffs of Minnesota and Detroit as an assistant coach.
