NCAA Basketball: Who are the best D-I coaches who have played professional basketball?
2. Avery Johnson, Alabama Crimson Tide
Avery Johnson was a terrific NBA backup point guard. Johnson played 16 seasons in the NBA with San Antonio, Golden State, Seattle, Dallas, and Houston. He averaged 8.4 points and 5.5 assists in 1,054 career games.
Johnson is also an excellent coach. He started his career in the NBA with the Dallas Mavericks, leading them to the playoffs in four straight years. He got the Mavs to the Western Conference semifinals and NBA Finals in his first two years, but got bounced in the first round in the other two seasons. Johnson, who compiled a 254-186 record in the NBA, also coached the Nets in both New Jersey and Brooklyn.
The 2006 NBA Coach of the Year has been at Alabama for two years. He has a 37-30 record with the Crimson Tide and two NIT appearances. Alabama got bounced by the Richmond Spiders in the NIT first round this year, marking the second consecutive season they have played one postseason game.
