12. Villanova over Georgetown

The 1985 finals was an inter-conference matchup between two Big East rivals. There was a powerhouse Georgetown team that was in their third National Championship in four years and in its second straight (they were looking for a repeat). Then there was Villanova, who was barely able to make it out of the first round.

Villanova was a No. 8 seed and is the lowest seed to ever win a National Championship. They were 25-10 entering the final and finished fourth in the Big East during the regular season. They lost to Georgetown twice during the year.

They had to go through Patrick Ewing’s team that was in its third National Championship. They entered the game on a 17-game win streak and with a record of 35-2. The Wildcats held off the Hoyas on an inbound pass with two seconds left, winning 66-64.
