The Maryland basketball program has been built for long-term success, but what were the best games of the 2016-17 season?

Maryland basketball has a rich and storied history and has had plenty of success after joining the Big Ten Conference. Even though their schedule wasn’t super flashy this year, there were still plenty of games that stand out.

They had a relatively disappointing season for Maryland standards but still made the NCAA Tournament for the third straight year. They finished tied for second in the Big Ten and earned a No. 6 seed in the NCAA Tournament. Additionally, it was the third straight season the Terrapins reached 25 or more wins.

The Terrapins will lose Melo Trimble to the NBA draft, potentially Justin Jackson to the NBA, and Micah Thomas will transfer. Justin Jackson declared for the NBA draft but did not hire an agent. It may not be ideal, but it will allow Mark Turgeon and the younger players to develop into the next stars for Maryland.

Anthony Cowan and Kevin Huerter, both freshmen, will emerge as scoring threats for the team. They will return as the team’s highest scorers with Trimble and Jackson leaving the Maryland basketball program.

Cowan averaged 10.3 points per game and 3.7 assists per game, tying him as the team leader. Huerter averaged 9.3 points per game and 4.9 rebounds per game. So while the team will lose quite a bit of talent, these two guys can grow from this season and develop into stars.
