Oral Roberts hired a new basketball coach, as the Golden Eagles welcome Paul Mills of the Baylor Bears.

Things are looking up for the Oral Roberts Golden Eagles, as they hired former Baylor Bears’ assistant coach Paul Mills as head coach.

Last season, Oral Roberts finished dead last in the Summit League standings with a dismal 8-22 overall record, 4-12 in conference play. From afar, this looks as if the Golden Eagles were one of the worst teams in college basketball. However, one look at their surprisingly difficult schedule will reveal that this is simply not true.

On top of playing bigger-name teams like Baylor and the Oklahoma Sooners, Oral Roberts competed with the Ole Miss Rebels, Creighton Blue Jays, and Michigan State Spartans – all teams that went to either the NIT or NCAA Tournament. This team was not that far off from getting some really big wins in 2016-17 and that bodes well for the future.

New hire Mills spent 14 years as a member of the Baylor Bears, and eight total seasons as an assistant coach. The Baylor website states that he was the coordinator of men’s basketball operations before that, so Oral Roberts will know that they are getting a coach who understands the ins and outs of everything a college basketball head coach must do.

While it likely won’t happen in year one, Mills is a fantastic hire. Expect Oral Roberts to continue to schedule well and, more importantly, compete for the Summit League title in the next few years.
