2017 NBA Draft: 5 best fits for NC State Wolfpack’s Dennis Smith
By Taylor Sturm
NC State freshman Dennis Smith Jr. is headed off to the 2017 NBA Draft, but which teams would be the best fit for the talented young point guard?
The NC State Wolfpack were arguably the most disappointing team in all of college basketball last season. After heading into the year expected to be a consistent top 25 team, the Wolfpack finished with a dismal 15-17 overall record and a next-to-last finish in the ACC.
There were, however, some positives, and one of these positives was freshman point guard Dennis Smith Jr.
Smith, a 19-year-old from Fayetteville, North Carolina, is expected to be an early lottery pick in the 2017 NBA Draft. Last season, Smith came into NC State as a five-star freshman and finished with an exceptional 18.1 points per game, 4.6 rebounds per game, 6.2 assists per game, and 1.9 steals per game across 34.8 minutes per game. These numbers are phenomenal for a freshman in the ACC, even on a losing team.
Any other year, he might be a top three NBA Draft pick, but the duo of Markelle Fultz and Lonzo Ball should mean that he is the clear No. 3 choice at point guard in the draft. De’Aaron Fox could also be taken above him, but I think Smith has the potential to be the most consistent of all the lottery-pick point guards and gets picked just before Fox.
That being said, there are many teams in desperate need of a point guard, and Smith has what it takes to deliver as a rookie.
Here are five NBA teams that would be the best fit for NC State’s Dennis Smith.
