College Basketball: 10 of the best available transfers right now
By Doug Winkey
It’s time to rerank the best transfers available in light of many names coming off the board.
The list of best transfers has changed a bit since our first ranking. Over half of that first list have found new homes. However, there are still plenty of guys on the market that could make a difference for a different program.
Over 560 players have declared their intentions to find new schools since last season began. That works out to roughly 1.6 players per program, but still far less than the 811 we saw in 2016. There is a chance we could see the same size market as last year, but things will have to pick up to equal the previous feeding frenzy. If the current number doesn’t climb near last spring’s total, it will show that the transfer “epidemic” is an overblown topic that top coaches and media personalities throw around just to complain.
The best names gone from our previous listing are easily Dedric Lawson and his brother K.J. The former Memphis Tigers will try and help Kansas win its first national title since 2008 after sitting out next season. Other names who could make big impacts are Al Freeman (Baylor to NC State) and Marcus Evans (pictured, moving from Rice to VCU).
There are plenty of guys out there that can help a program. The best transfers available will continue to change throughout the spring and summer as guys come on and off the board. Few will carry the hype of Marcus Evans going to VCU, but one or two of the names are capable of adding serious punch to the right roster.
