2017 NBA Draft: Players who were the biggest winners and losers in the draft
Loser: Ike Anigbogu and his draft day slide
Injuries were what derailed Ike Anigbogu’s lottery potential, but few saw him falling as far as he did on draft night. For an already raw prospect, falling into the second round can be tough. The leash for becoming a rotation player is shorter than it is for a first round prospect and sometimes that can derail a young career.
On the other hand, developing into a star from the second round can be an incredible story. With the help of developing next to budding star Myles Turner in Indiana, Anigbogu could make a name for himself a few years down the road. The expectations are lower than they would be if he was a lottery pick or late-first round selection, but it is always hard to fight against the adversity of being a second round pick.
There are many that pan out, and hopefully Anigbogu will be one of those, but a draft day slide, either from injury or other reasoning, rarely puts a player in a great spot to begin with. The hope is that Anigbogu’s injury history will go away and he will develop into a rotation or starting caliber center a couple of years down the road thanks to his ridiculous length and shot blocking ability.
