Iowa State Basketball: Top five games from the 2016-2017 season
By Doug Winkey
Iowa State basketball played some incredible games this past season. Let’s take a look at the top five from 2016-2017 and how they went down.
It will take a while for the shine to wear off this Iowa State basketball season. With 24 wins, a third Big 12 Tournament Championship in four years, winning at Kansas, there was a lot to like in 2016-2017. There were almost too many great moments to boil down into a simple top five.
Even if the Cyclones are down next season, head coach Steve Prohm’s second year was a huge success. Four of the winningest players in school history went out to the tune of four straight NCAA Appearances. Those four appearances are part of a school-record six straight for the program. Next year could end that streak, but six straight is something to be proud of for the school in Ames, Iowa.
Iowa State has quickly developed into one of the most consistent programs in the country, thanks in large part to their impressive group of seniors having just graduated.
The nonconference schedule this season had only one notable win, which came against Miami in a not-so-but-neutral site game in Orlando. Otherwise, the early season contained easier competition in addition to crushing losses against Gonzaga, Cincinnati, and Iowa. Things really got going, however, once Big 12 play started. The Cyclones ended up going 12-6 in conference play, which included winning five road games. The big game at Lawrence looms large, but what other great contests did Iowa State win this year?
