Former New Mexico Lobos’ guard Jordan Hunter will transfer to Lamar University.

Whenever a team brings in a new head coach, fringe rotation players usually decided to transfer.

This is the case as Paul Weir, former head coach of the New Mexico State Aggies, makes the jump to head coach of the New Mexico Lobos.

Several former New Mexico players have decided to head off to another school as the team moves forward, one of whom is Jordan Hunter.

Hunter, a 5’11, 180-pound guard out of Beaumont, Texas, was a high-end three-star recruit coming out of high school as a member of the Class of 2015. His expectations were lofty, but the ineptitude of the Lobos during that time period as well as a lack of playing time hindered his development.

While with New Mexico, Hunter played just nine minutes per game as a freshman, averaging 2.3 points per game. As a sophomore, his playing time increased to just under 20 minutes per game, but he merely raised his scoring average to 5.6 points per game. The most impressive development was his passing ability, which rose from 1.1 per game to 2.6 per game.

Hunter will transfer from New Mexico to Lamar University.

Lamar, located in his hometown of Beaumont, is a team that plays in the Southland Conference, earning a single bid to the NCAA Tournament by the conference tournament winner. You might remember the Southland as the conference that has produced such solid NCAA Tournament teams as Stephen F. Austin and Sam Houston State from years past, but the overall conference is extremely competitive.

Hunter comes into a team where he should see minutes as soon as he is eligible and, more importantly, could help lead them to an NCAA Tournament in a year or two. In fact, he might even have more of a chance to get to the NCAA Tournament with Lamar than he would with New Mexico in the next two seasons.
