Gonzaga is the first school Southern Utah grad transfer Randy Onwuasor will visit. Are they a fit for the high scoring guard?

When it seemed like the transfer news was all but over, it was announced that Southern Utah star Randy Onwuasor intended to transfer. As a grad transfer, Onwuasor is immediately eligible to play, making him a big target for teams looking to add one final piece.

Last season, Onwuasor was one of the best players in the Big Sky Conference, averaging a league high 23.6 points per game. He also led the Thunderbirds with 6.6 rebounds, 3.2 assists, and 1.5 steals.

Onwuasor initially declared for the draft before returning to school. His decision to transfer may be motivated by a desire to gain more national exposure prior to next year’s draft.

Among the teams that have shown interest in the guard are Gonzaga, South Carolina, Oregon, LSU, and South Carolina. Each of these teams has lost quite a bit of talent from last season, with three of them appearing in the Final Four.

Currently, Gonzaga is the only school with a confirmed visit, set for August 1st (Per CBS Sport’s Jon Rothstein).

This bodes well for the Zags, who have the scholarships to sign Onwuasor and solidify themselves as a Top 25 team. Although, Onwuasor will probably visit other programs before making any decision.

Onwuasor is a good fit for the Zags given Head Coach Mark Few’s love for guards who can drive and finish at the rim. In the past, Few has recruited slashing guards – such as Byron Wesley, Eric McLellan, and Nigel Williams-Goss – to compliment his shooters.

Onwuasor would help the Zags solidify a backcourt that features good shooters in Josh Perkins, Silas Melson, and Zach Norvell. It would also allow Mark Few to run his traditional three guard lineup without relying on freshmen Jesse Wade and Joel Ayayi as the only bench players.

This move would also benefit Onwuasor, by removing his need to take shots from three, where he only makes around 30%.

Next: Going to school v. playing internationally

While nothing is confirmed, things look good for the Zags, who are also interested in Illinois State grad transfer Deontae Hawkins. If they are able to secure Onwuasor, they would easily be the favorite to, once again, win the WCC.
