Syracuse Basketball: Eric Devendorf and Donte Green lead Boeheim’s Army to TBT Elite Eight
Can the Boeheim’s Army finally get over the hump in The Basketball Tournament once again?
Several Syracuse basketball alumni have once again teamed up to try to win The Basketball Tournament winner-take-all prize of $2 million. The team, appropriately named Boeheim’s Army (in honor of head coach Jim Boeheim), is in the Northeast regional final for the second time in three years. The prize money has gone up in each of the three years of the tournament. In 2014, the prize money was $500,00 and that went up to $1 million in 2015. 95% of the prize money goes to the team or the team’s charity with the remaining 5% going to its fans.
Boeheim’s Army reached the Northeast Region championship game in 2015 but was ousted in the Super 16 by the Untouchables (Pitt alumni). This year, the region’s third seed, Boeheim’s Army defeated seventh-seed Team Fancy RYU 65-61 in the Super 16. Eric Devendorf led the way with 19 points and Donte Green added 14. But it was Brandon Triche, who came up big time for Boeheim’s Army. Triche scored the final seven points for Boeheim’s Army, including the go-ahead three-pointer with a tad over a minute left.
Boeheim’s Army (3-0) opened the tournament with a 99-66 route of 14th-seed Dubois Dream as Triche posted a triple-double. Boeheim’s Army then needed double overtime to defeat Gaelnation (Iona alumni) 106-100 in round two. Greene poured in 32 points and Devendorf posted a double-double with 23 points and 10 caroms.
Boeheim’s Army will face fourth seed Team FOE (3-0) in the regional final at 3 p.m. (EDT) on July 23. The game will be televised by ESPN.
The winner of Boeheim’s Army-Team Foe will match-up against Overseas Elite-Ram Nation (VCU alumni) winner in one semifinal in Baltimore in one semifinal.
