College Basketball: WKU and Mitchell Robinson story gets interesting
By Taylor Sturm
Mitchell Robinson has been suspended from the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers, and it looks like he will not participate in the 2017-18 college basketball season.
Many scratched their heads when five-star Class of 2017 recruit Mitchell Robinson decided to choose the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers over several other college basketball programs in better conferences.
Western Kentucky, a school that plays basketball in Conference-USA, is a solid program and a good college, but it still does not make sense that they would snag a five-star recruit from outside the state. That rarely happens in college basketball, especially when five-star recruits usually have the option to play overseas and get paid for a year if they do not wish to play at a big-name college basketball program.
Now, it is being reported that Robinson has been suspended from the Hilltoppers for a violation of team rules after he left the university two weeks into summer school. It is likely that the 7’0, 222-pound center will transfer or head off to play overseas before going to the NBA Draft.
That being said, I was excited to see what Robinson would do at WKU, and it is disappointing that C-USA did not get the extra attention it deserved. However, this should be about what is best for the student-athlete, and, clearly, WKU was not what Robinson wanted to do.
