The Nebraska Cornhuskers are continuing to build in the Big Ten but will head into 2017-18 with a key depth player injured in Anton Gill.

Last season, the Nebraska Cornhuskers’ guard Anton Gill appeared in every game before rupturing his patella tendon prior to the start of Big Ten play. Unfortunately, news broke that he will likely not be cleared to play until September.

Gill played for the Louisville Cardinals for two seasons before transferring to Nebraska. He averaged 1.3 and 2.4 points per game over both seasons but played less than 10 minutes per game in each.

Once at Nebraska and eligible to play, Gill averaged 17 minutes per game while providing 3.8 points per game as a spark off of the bench. His biggest accomplishments were two 10-point performances against the Dayton Flyers in a surprising win and Gardner-Webb in a disappointing loss.

Unfortunately, he would injure himself in a workout after the solid start to the season, rupturing his right patella tendon. He would then play in none of the Cornhuskers’ Big Ten games after appearing in every game prior to that; a huge loss to a team that desperately needed depth.

Nebraska, who struggled heavily last season, could have used him during the brutal schedule that is Big Ten conference play. Likewise heading into next season, the news that he won’t be cleared to play until September will be disappointing because Tim Miles’ squad could use all the help that they can get.

Hopefully, Gill will get to play some this season and help Nebraska move forward with their program and (potentially) in the win column.
