UNC Greensboro Basketball: Coach Wes Miller signs five-year contract
By Taylor Sturm
The UNC Greensboro Spartans had a fantastic 2016-17 season, and their coach, Wes Miller, has been rewarded with a brand new five-year deal to stay with the team.
The UNC Greensboro Spartans navigated a tough Southern Conference schedule last season to finish with an impressive 25-10 overall record and tied atop the final regular season conference standings.
Unfortunately, the SoCon is a one-bid, automatic qualifier conference, so their SoCon Tournament loss to the East Tennessee State Buccaneers meant that the Spartans went to the NIT instead of the NCAA Tournament.
Although the eventual NIT loss to the Syracuse Orange was disappointing, it was still a phenomenal season for UNCG, and head coach Wes Miller has been rewarded with a much-deserved five-year contract with the school.
This announcement was confirmed by a school spokesman and means that the Spartans will feel that they have Miller secured as their head coach for at least a few more seasons.
Personally, I believe that Miller will not last all five years on the contract, moving on to a different, bigger program somewhere down the road. The Southern Conference is one of the most underrated conferences in college basketball and therefore a haven for top coaches who end up moving on to larger programs.
Two of the more recent ones to do so are Will Wade, who moved from the Chattanooga Mocs to the VCU Rams and is now at the LSU Tigers, and former Mocs’ coach Matt McCall, who now coaches in the A-10 with the UMass Minutemen.
