Ivy League Basketball: 2017-18 stars on each team in the conference
Harvard Crimson – Bryce Aiken and Seth Towns
While Dartmouth struggled with their youth, Harvard excelled, finishing second in the conference at 10-4. This team was built upon their ranked 2016 recruiting class, with Tommy Amaker able to convince top 100 prospects to come to Harvard.
The crown jewels of the class, Bryce Aiken and Seth Towns, played better than many fans could have hoped for. Aiken was the best scorer on the team, finishing fifth in the conference with 14.5 ppg.
His high volume scoring potential was on display when taking on rival Yale as well. In two games against the Bulldogs, Aiken finished with 27 and 28 points, respectively. This was impressive considering it came against one of the better teams in the league.
His partner Seth Towns might not be as good a scorer at 12.3 ppg, but is slightly more efficient. He can still put up big numbers, though, as he showed when posted 26 points against Princeton.
The thing both players need to work on is their consistency. Aiken had seven games and Towns had eight games where they scored less than seven points, including a couple of donut games. If both can put up consistent double-digit scoring efforts together, then this backcourt won’t just be feared in the Ivy, but nationally too.
Throw in another talented piece of that recruiting class in Chris Lewis, who led the conference in field goal percentage with 65% as well and something special is brewing. Include the fact that this young unit was the second best defensive team in the league and the Crimson could be the likely favorite in the conference next season.
