Khadim Sy will transfer from the Virginia Tech Hokies. Is a promising 2017-18 season falling apart before our eyes?

After a somewhat surprisingly successful 2016-17 campaign, the Virginia Tech Hokies navigated an extremely difficult schedule in order to finish the season in the top half of the ACC and earn a trip to the 2017 NCAA Tournament.

The Hokies would lose in their opening game to an under-seeded Wisconsin Badgers squad but should be happy with the results from Buzz Williams and Co.

That being said, Virginia Tech went into the offseason with the expectation that in 2017-18 they could be a lock as an NCAA Tournament team and push the “elite” teams in the ACC for a shot at the regular season conference title.

Fast-forward to September, however, and those expectations could be in jeopardy.

Former UNC Greensboro transfer Ty Outlaw went down with an injury – a player who was expected to play more of a prominent role next season. Chris Clarke is going to be the key cog of this team but is still working his way back from an injury suffered last season.

And now, Khadim Sy, a former three-star recruit, is transferring from Virginia Tech, according to the program.

There is still talent and depth across this roster, but the signs point to the 2017-18 quickly falling apart for the Hokies if anything else goes wrong.

The good news for Hokies’ fans, however, is Williams’ teams have always had the “next man up” mentality. So, all of the offseason drama could merely be just that – meaningless offseason drama.

Keep an eye on Virginia Tech next season, because they have the potential to be one of the better teams in the ACC, but could also end up in a downward spiral. I vote for the former, but you never know in college basketball.
