College Basketball: 5 mid-majors tremendously impacted by transfers
2. Florida Gulf Coast Eagles
Since their improbable Sweet 16 run a few years ago, the Eagles have remained in the picture as one of the upper echelon mid-major programs. Even after Andy Enfield left for the USC Trojans, his replacement Joe Dooley has filled right in. While taking in transfers, FGCU plans on sticking around for the foreseeable future.
Their returning leading scorer Brandon Goodwin is a transfer from Central Florida who has blossomed at his new school. Looking to replicate that success, here’s the next wave of transfers Dooley will have at his disposal:
Troy Baxter, UNLV (must sit out this season)
Brady Ernst, Iowa State via Juco
Michael Gilmore, VCU
Ricky Doyle, Michigan
If former top-100 recruit Troy Baxter can improve his skills during his redshirt year this upcoming season, he could be the biggest steal of the entire offseason for FGCU. Becoming a destination place for high-major transfers can be equal to a top-25 recruiting class these days. And this will be the route Dooley and the Eagles will be going for years to come.
