Auburn Basketball: How is Chuck Person involved in FBI investigation?
By Taylor Sturm
Bad news for the Auburn Tigers, as Chuck Person, an assistant coach, has been charged as part of an FBI investigation into fraud and corruption in college basketball.
The Auburn Tigers were coming into the 2017-18 college basketball season with high expectations, and, for the first time in a long time, might be favored to make the NCAA Tournament.
Unfortunately, there will now be a dark cloud hanging over this team’s head, as assistant coach Chuck Person has been charged as part of a fraud and corruption investigation into college basketball by the FBI.
Most of these charges stem from assistant coaches being paid in order to help brands have some influence on which brand a player represents once they move on to the next level.
Person has been implicated as someone who received bribes. In fact, it looks as if Person was paid $91,500 in one bribe, and, as reported by Gary Parrish, most of this surrounds brands wishing to have a relationship with Austin Wiley.
No one will be more damaged by this by association than Auburn’s Bruce Pearl, however.
As someone who attended the University of Tennessee when all of the other things happened with Pearl, I feel bad for him. If he was involved at all, he should be fired. But if he wasn’t (and right now nothing suggests he is), then people are going to believe he was involved just because of his run-in with the NCAA from before.
