College basketball: Five consequences of FBI investigation
College basketball was shaken to its core Tuesday morning. There are several ways this sport will change, for better or worse.
If your team was mentioned in Tuesday’s report then this season will be agonizing, as there’s no clue how far this can go. If your team wasn’t mentioned, the next couple of months will still be agonizing because of the unknowns of the investigation.
This isn’t a surprise to followers of the sport. With revenues at an all-time high, and grassroots being replaced by shoe brands with high school athletes, corruption was likely to happen.
With ten people already arrested and a cooperating witness involved, this clearly isn’t the usual NCAA process that takes years to accomplish and get done. These guys are serious, and anyone with anything to do with this should be very nervous not just about their jobs but potentially their freedom.
Each year we may hear a school or two get in trouble individually, but no one expected the FBI to implicate a multitude of high-profile teams in just one day. Teams who get five-star recruits have always been under scrutiny, but, with these, charges every commitment is now met with skepticism.
There are both short and long-term effects of this scandal. There will be players unable to play this season, impacting team’s chances of advancing. Jobs are also on the line, with an impact in recruiting strategies to affect the power structure of the top teams.
Here are five specific effects that the FBI investigation will have on college basketball in the near future.
