Iowa basketball has their first recruit for the class of 2019 and it’s a good one. Patrick McCaffery has decided to play under his father for the Hawkeyes.

After making the NCAA Tournament in three consecutive seasons, Iowa basketball was unable to make a return trip to the Big Dance this past season. Although they lost top scorer Peter Jok (19.9 points per game) to graduation in the offseason, the team still has a bright future.

Sophomores Tyler Cook and Jordan Bohannon are two of the best rising stars in the conference and they are joined by fellow sophomores Cordell Pemsl and Isaiah Moss as talented young players. This group of players is going to lead the program for the next couple of years and they should help Iowa compete with the best in the Big Ten.

As far as what is going to replace them once they leave, Iowa basketball has already gotten a start on their recruiting class of 2019. For head coach Fran McCaffery, he did not even need to leave his own house to recruit this player, as he is his own son.

By the literal definition of the term, Pat McCaffery is a “coach’s kid.”

For the class of 2019, McCaffery is ranked at No. 36 in the country. McCaffery is a 6’7″, 170-pound small forward who currently ranks at No. 9 at his position. Not only is McCaffery the coach’s son, but he has all the talent to be recruited by a power-5 program like the Iowa Hawkeyes.

McCaffery has tremendously good length on the wing and can score both inside and out. Once he gets to campus, he will be expected to be an instant starter who can be a go-to scorer for his dad.

Patrick’s commitment to the Hawkeyes has to be great news for Coach Fran, especially when considering the fact that Patrick will be able to play with his brother, Connor. Connor McCaffery is starting his freshman year with the Hawkeyes this year after also committing to play for his father. Connor was ranked at No. 150 in the country for the class of 2017 as a 6’4″ wing player.

When Patrick joins the team in 2019-20, Connor will be in his junior season and they will have two years to play with each other under their dad.

In addition to how much this single commitment means to his family and the basketball program, this is an early commitment for the class of 2019 that can have a major impact on recruiting.

With plenty of time left in the recruiting period for the class of 2019, Patrick will be able to communicate will fellow top recruits about the possibility of joining him at Iowa. With how talented and committed to Iowa Patrick is, he could have a major impact on how good the incoming recruiting class of 2019 can be for the school.

This is certainly a special recruitment both for Iowa and the McCaffery family. Not only is McCaffery an important recruit because of his talent, but the ties between the family and the school are becoming stronger now that both Connor and Patrick will be playing for the Hawkeyes. It will be interesting to see how the McCaffery trio work together when they start working together in 2019-20.
