UCLA Bruins coach Steve Alford was given a much-deserved one-year contract extension with the school.

While the drama surrounding the UCLA Bruins has focused on LaVar Ball and the Ball family over the past few seasons, Steve Alford has somewhat quietly done a fantastic job at the helm of one of the most difficult coaching jobs in sports.

Alford was rewarded for that success with a deserved one-year contract extension.

Expectations are always high at UCLA so there may be a section of the fanbase that irrationally believes the Bruins should win the National Championship every season.

The thing about college basketball now is that there is never going to be a dynasty the likes of UCLA and Wooden. If you have a team full of stars who decide to return next season, another school might get a one-and-done who is better than your whole team.

Yes, that is an exaggeration, but you get my point. The talent level coming up through the ranks is the best it has ever been, and the one-and-done trend means that there is a lot of turnover when it comes to National Championship winners — even if the teams at the top tend to remain the same.

Alford has done a great job in his time at UCLA, and, although he has yet to show us something special, the program and the school are slowly getting there. He deserves this contract extension, and I cannot wait to see what this team can accomplish in 2017-18.
