In 2017, the Georgetown Hoyas elected to end the John Thompson family era.  The Hoyas elected to hire a basketball legend in Patrick Ewing. Ewing who was on the Georgetown championship team of 1984. No one understands the type of basketball that Georgetown should be playing as a program more than Ewing.

The fact that Patrick Ewing was the guy to oust John Thompson III is the definition of irony for the Hoyas. John Thompson III is the son of Patrick Ewing’s former coach and mentor John Thompson Jr.  Thompson Jr. may not have liked the ousting of his son, but at least Ewing was the guy to replace him.

Ewing has surrounded himself with some very good basketball minds, and there is no question he will be able to coach. The question with Ewing and his staff lie in the ability to recruit quality players to play for the Hoyas  Ewing has a team this year that is deprived of talent but has enough talent to sneak up on some teams in the Big East.

The Hoyas are going to work hard in the coming years to capture the elite DC talent like they had done so for so many years under John Thompson Jr. Ewing and company hope to get Georgetown back to elite status and do so quickly. In this era of college basketball, not having a specific home arena, which Georgetown lacks, may hurt your ability to recruit at a high level.

No matter, how the firing of John Thompson III was handled, the Ewing era starts now for the Hoyas.  Initially, the Hoyas may struggle but Ewing should be able to get this team back to their national prowess and prestige in no time.
