Oklahoma State basketball has received their first commitment out of the class of 2018. 6’8″ forward Duncan Demuth has announced he will join the Cowboys.

The Oklahoma State Cowboys have been struggling since assistant coach Lamont Evans was arrested as part of the FBI’s ongoing pay to play bribery scandal. With potential sanctions and other unknowns looming over the program, their only commit of the summer Antwann Jones decided to de-commit. Losing a four-star player of his caliber was a big blow to head coach Mike Boynton.

In our Busting Brackets Big 12 Predictions, Oklahoma State was picked to finish ninth, above only Iowa State. With star player Jeffrey Carroll and forward Mitchell Solomon graduated, there are huge voids that need to be filled. And with the FBI investigation hovering around the program, the coaching staff can’t be choosers right now.

Still, they may have found something in 6’8 Duncan Demuth, who just committed to the program.

The Florida native committed to Oklahoma State just a couple of weeks after taking an official visit. A three-star prospect, he had offers from tournament teams like Florida State, Iowa State and South Carolina.

Demuth likes to operate as a face-up forward due to his comfortability on the perimeter. In addition, he excels when making plays with the ball in his hands. He’s not the most athletic player in the world, but he is tough and can finish in traffic down low.

He may not be Carroll’s replacement, but Demuth can be at least a solid role player for the Cowboys. There are countless examples of players being overlooked due to height or athleticism issues and have excelled in their college careers. Oklahoma State is in some trouble right now and getting any kind of good news is welcomed by this staff. They have plenty of work to do on the recruiting trail, but a player with good upside in Demuth is not a bad start.
