68 reasons to be excited for the 2017-18 college basketball season
6. What is the best conference in the country?
Answering this question might seem simple on the surface, but it really isn’t. Yes, the ACC is going to send the most teams to the Big Dance when the season is over, but that isn’t everything. Even if the ACC sends eight teams to the NCAA Tournament, this will barely be more than 50% of the conference.
For reference, it is possible that a conference such as the Big East sends seven teams to the Big Dance and that would account for 70% of the conference. From top to bottom, both the Big East and the Big 12 have the ability to possibly compete with the ACC as the top overall conference in the country.
The Pac-12 and the Big Ten can make their arguments, but both of those conferences have some serious bottom-feeders that can drag down the overall conference reputation. With the rise of several other teams, it is possible to say that the SEC might have even eclipsed the Pac-12 and the Big Ten in terms of overall competitiveness.
Nonetheless, this question will be answered the best when the teams show up in the NCAA Tournament and win games for their conference affiliation. In the last 10 years, the only major conferences to not win a championship are the Big Ten and the Pac-12. Will that change this season due to Arizona and Michigan State?
