Virginia Basketball: How the Cavaliers dominate with their elite defense
Behind the coaching of Tony Bennett, Virginia basketball once again has one of the best defenses in the nation. How does this propel them to wins?
The NC State Wolfpack entered their Jan. 14 game against Virginia basketball as one of the ACC’s hottest teams. Virginia quickly threw a wet blanket on any NC State hype. The Wolfpack struggled to score early in the game and were never able to find a good rhythm in this game.
Virginia’s vaunted “Pack Line” defense was the primary reason for the Wolfpack’s struggles. The Cavaliers forced the Wolfpack into 12.5% shooting from beyond the arc (2-16). In addition to causing the abysmal 3-point shooting, the Cavaliers also recorded eight steals and forced fifteen turnovers.
The Wolfpack are not alone in their offensive struggles against Virginia. Bennett’s scheme has flummoxed many opponents and his teams consistently play elite defense.
What makes Virginia’s defense great?
While the Cavaliers may not produce many highlight-worthy plays, their defense is the country’s most efficient, according to Ken Pomeroy. Also, they are currently the stingiest defense in the country as opponents only score an average of 52.9 points per game.
One of the main reasons that Virginia’s defense is so frustrating to play is due to the increased value of each possession. By slowing the pace and controlling the tempo, the Cavaliers make it difficult for opponents to establish a good rhythm. As a result of limited opportunities, turnovers are especially devastating in games against Virginia.
Additionally, opponents are unable to consistently get to the free throw line against the Cavaliers. The Cavaliers commit the fourth-fewest personal fouls in the country. Basically, there are no easy ways to score against Virginia.
Perimeter defense is a key to Bennett’s scheme. One of the main reasons for Virginia’s elite defense is the play of sophomore guards Kyle Guy and Ty Jerome. Bennett also emphasizes defense-first mentalities when he is recruiting.
Also, Bennett’s strategy hinges on rim protection. Center Jack Salt is the anchor of the Virginia defense and is a key cog in the Pack Line system. Forward Isaiah Wilkins also makes his presence felt on defense and leads the team in blocked shots (1.5 per game).
Can Virginia score enough to win big in March?
This has been a FAQ for Virginia teams in recent years. The Cavaliers have an efficient offense to match their suffocating defense. Guy and Jerome are the headliners on offense, but they have an excellent supporting cast.
Guard Devon Hall scored a career-high 25 points in the win over NC State and is averaging 12.7 points per game for the season. De’Andre Hunter, Wilkins, and Nigel Johnson have also provided valuable offensive contributions for the Cavaliers.
