Horizon League Basketball: Early Player of the Year Candidates
By Bryan Mauro
Kameron Chatman — Detroit Mercy
Chatman much like Nunn is a transfer from a Big Ten school. However, Chatman transferred from Michigan due to lack of playing time. The lack of playing time has changed in a big way for Chatman at Detroit. The Titans lead the league in points per game at about 83, and Chatman is a big reason the Titans are lighting up the scoreboard.
Chatman is the main cog in the offense at Detroit, and it runs through him. He is averaging 17.9 points per game to go along with 9.0 rebounds and 2.1 assists. Chatman is a tall guard at 6’9” and is another guy who is putting up ridiculous numbers shooting the basketball. Chatman is shooting almost 50% from the floor and shooting 45% from three and 90% from the charity stripe. That is the definition of an efficient offense.
The Titans have not won many games this year, and, until recently, were mired in an 11-game losing streak. Chatman is appointment TV within the Horizon League, and, watching him play, it is hard to figure how he did not earn any playing time at Michigan.
The Titans don’t care about the circumstances that led Chatman to the Titans, as he has at times taken over games for Detroit. He is a huge factor for the Titans. It will be a season in which Detroit will no longer be playing past the Horizon League tournament, but at least the Titan fans can rest easy knowing they have Chatman back on campus for at least another year.
