Tre Jones – Point guard

When Duke struggled last season, a big part of it involved not having a true point guard on the team. Since then, the coaching staff has made it a priority to always have a high-level ball handler on the roster. This was evident by Trevon Duval coming in this year.

The team already has next year’s point guard locked in as well with Tre Jones, the younger brother of the last Duke national champion starting point guard, Tyus. The west coast powerhouses such as USC, UCLA, and Oregon were involved in the recruitment, but the younger Jones was always coming to Durham, officially committing in mid-October.

The older brother was there for only one year and it’s very likely that’s the case for the 6’2 guard out of Apple Valley, Minnesota, as his scoring ability and decision-making might be even better than Tyus’s at this point in both careers.

Where he fits on next year’s team

Of course, he’s the likely starting point guard, but the Blue Devils are still looking for another ball handler in case of injury. There’s also the issue of whether Jones will be as good as Duval or flame out like previous freshman point guard Derryck Thornton.
