Pac-12 Basketball: Why it’s college basketball’s most competitive title race
By Connor Hope
Despite being regarded as perhaps the worst major conference in the country, the Pac-12 has quietly set itself up for one of the most exciting finishes in college basketball.
With the 2017-2018 NCAA basketball regular season coming to a close, many teams are still fighting to increase their conference tournament seeding and NCAA tournament resumes.
No conference has as much riding on the end of the season as the Pac-12, which is the college basketball’s most competitive league.
Although the Pac-12 is by no means the strongest or most dominant conference, the teams within the league have put together one of the most exhilarating seasons in recent memory.
Pac-12 Standings:
Team | Record | Games Back |
Arizona | 10-3 | — |
UCLA | 8-5 | 2 |
USC | 8-5 | 2 |
Oregon | 7-5 | 2.5 |
Washington | 7-5 | 2.5 |
Arizona State | 7-6 | 3 |
Utah | 7-6 | 3 |
Colorado | 7-6 | 3 |
Stanford | 7-6 | 3 |
Oregon State | 5-7 | 4.5 |
California | 2-11 | 8 |
Washington State | 1-11 | 8.5 |
With just over two weeks left in the regular season, only Cal and Washington State have been eliminated from title contention. That means 10 teams are still mathematically able to win the Pac-12 Regular Season Championship.
While Arizona holds a two game lead over second place UCLA and USC, the spread between the next eight teams is only one game. Even Oregon State is back in the mix, after winning two in a row at home.
Moving forward, Arizona is still the favorite to win the Pac-12, as long as it can survive road games against Arizona State, Oregon and Oregon State. Behind the Wildcats, however, the conference is up for grabs.
Will Aaron Holiday shoulder UCLA into title contention? Can the Trojans finally put together a string of consistent performances? How well can Utah really play to close the season? Will Oregon State do the unthinkable?
