ACC basketball: Power ranking the league down the stretch
The month of February has been a hectic one for the ACC, with big upsets, intense rivalry games, and notable injuries.
There has been a bit of a shakeup at the top of our rankings. The top five has shifted a bit, and the middle of the pack contains five teams hovering around the .500 mark. With every team having played between 12-to-14 conference games, we have many changes in our ACC power rankings.
As of Valentine’s Day night 2018, the ACC race has started to clear up a bit. There is a clear hierarchy, with Virginia being in a tier of their own. The Cavaliers lone conference loss was to Virginia Tech in a one-point overtime game. Virginia still has the inside track to a one-seed in the NCAA Tournament. They went on the road and secured a nine-point win over Miami using their usual brand of intense defense and timely shot-making.
Pittsburgh head coach Kevin Stallings’ season of misery continues, as the Panthers are still winless (0-14) in conference play. Things don’t get much easier for them moving forward, with a trip to Florida State and a home game against ACC top dog Virginia on the horizon.
Speaking of Florida State, the Seminoles recently picked up their biggest conference win in an overtime thriller against 11th ranked Clemson.
The rest of the bottom dwellers of the ACC haven’t fared much better as of late. Georgia Tech and Wake Forest are struggling, but Wake Forest got a rare ACC win at home against the Yellow Jackets. Boston College actually has some upside and has won two games in a row. Besides that, every team between Louisville and Notre Dame are within three games of each other.
With so much parity in the middle, where does that leave teams like Miami and Syracuse in this week’s edition of ACC Power rankings?
