Georgetown loses 90-86 in overtime in final regular season home game to Marquette. It’s just yet another example of the Hoyas unable to finish games.

Georgetown moved to 1-4 in overtime games with their 90-86 loss to Marquette.

Coming into the game, Georgetown knew they would face a serious challenge from Marquette. The Golden Eagles were sitting squarely on the bubble after their loss at DePaul.

With Marquette needing a big game out of their core players they got just that from senior Andrew Rowsey and sophomore Sam Hauser. Marquette coach, Steve Wojciechowski, made a living putting Rowsey and Hauser in screen and roll, screen and pop and screen and slip. Running sets that eventually ended in two-man game was Marquette’s bell cow.

The Hoyas struggled with Rowsey and Hauser all night. Both finished with 28 points.

Most of the looks Hauser had were wide open. Not only were the Hoyas bigs too slow to recover, they weren’t even in the same zip code. Hauser would finish 7-8 from the three-point line, 10-14 overall from the field.

Covering Rowsey proved to be even tough. Even though his shooting percentage was below 50%, 10-22, he made continued to make big plays.

For Georgetown, Marcus Derrickson was their best player tonight. He got into foul trouble and the Golden Eagles would take full advantage. After he picked up his fourth foul, Marquette would go on a 19-8 run turning a 6 point deficit into a 5 point lead.

With Hoyas fought back and forced the game into overtime with a Mulmore layup at the end of regulation.

Key Sequence of the Game – Like any game decided in overtime, there are quite of few points in the game that could fall into this category but for Marquette it was the last 2:08 of the first half. With Georgetown up 12, Rowsey hit a three pointer. After a Jonathan Mulmore turnover, Rowsey hit another three pointer and just like that the lead was cut in half. Mulmore would hit a three of his own pushing the lead to nine. Georgetown’s next possession would be key.

Jessie Govan would miss a three pointer with six seconds left which was more than enough time for Rowsey to come down and hit another three before the end of the half. Suddenly instead of being down double digits, Marquette was only down six at the half.

Best Player of the Floor – Sam Hauser (Marquette). Hauser was the biggest mismatch on the floor. His ability to slide to his most comfortable spots behind the three-point line, allowed him to get off his shot with very little resistance but they still have to go in and go in they did. Had the shots, not dropped, it would have allowed Georgetown to get out on the break and the game would’ve been completely different.

Takeaway For the Hoyas – As corny as this sound, this team has shown no “give up” and this is the time of year you see it in college basketball. Down ten early, the Hoyas could’ve mailed this in at home. Remember, Marquette needs this one whereas for Georgetown this game has very little meaning on the bottom line.

Yet, the Hoyas fought back all night eventually pushing the lead to 12. Even more impressive was when they lost the lead and fell behind by five in the second half, the fought back once again. Even after Hauser hit a shot that looked like the game winner, Mulmore raced down the court with 3.5 seconds left to force overtime.

This team is close to competing in the Big East soon. And while these losses hurt, it’s another learning lesson for a mostly young Hoyas team.
