Georgia Basketball: Three candidates to replace Mark Fox
Ron Hunter
Hunter’s hire would hit a little bit closer to home, considering he’s the current coach of Georgia State.
To many people, Hunter is best known for the passion he exuded during his team’s run to the 2015 NCAA Tournament. He tore his Achilles during a celebration of the Sun Belt Conference championship, then slipped off his stool in celebration of his son’s game-winning shot during the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
Hunter is more than a silly meme, though. Earlier this season, he collected his 400th career victory. He led Georgia State’s transition from the Colonial to the Sun Belt, leading his team to first place finishes during his first two seasons in the conference.
The soon-to-be 54-year old has never had a chance to coach at an elite college program. He was an assistant at Miami (Ohio) before getting the head coaching job at IUPUI, where he remained for almost two decades before going to Georgia State.
Hunter likely wouldn’t be the long-term answer for the Bulldogs. He’s more of a career coach that can come in and create some enthusiasm within the program while grooming the next coaching star for the Bulldogs.
It’s a risky proposition, but it would bring some fans back to their seats.
