Kameron McGusty is choosing to transfer out of Oklahoma following his sophomore season with the Sooners.

Kameron McGusty is ensuring that the Oklahoma Sooners will look drastically different next season.

The sophomore guard announced his intention to transfer from the school on Monday afternoon. Taking to Twitter, McGusty revealed he asked for his release, without revealing the rationale behind that decision.

This isn’t necessarily the biggest loss for Lon Kruger and the Sooners. McGusty showed solid skills during his freshman year, averaging 10.9 points per game. His role waned, however, when Trae Young came to town.

McGusty averaged just eight points per game last season and went for stretches of radically decreased playing time during conference play.

He did score nine points in the NCAA Tournament loss to Rhode Island, though.

Interestingly, his role was set to increase during his junior year, as Young decided to take his talents to the NBA. In fact, he was likely going to be the team’s starting point guard.

McGusty immediately becomes one of the more intriguing prospects on the transfer market.

Meanwhile, Oklahoma’s makeover for the 2018-19 season continues. In addition to McGusty and Young, the team also saw Jordan Shepherd decide to transfer. Khadeem Lattin is graduating, wiping out a majority of the team’s most recognizable players.

The team’s recruiting class for next season isn’t inspiring much confidence right now. According to 247 Sports, the team’s 2018 class ranks outside of the Top 100 in the nation. Three-star combo guard Jamal Bieniemy was expected to provide depth, but now might be inserted into a bigger role.

Without some major wins on the recruiting trail, Oklahoma is going to sink back into the bottom end of the Big 12 next year.

Kameron McGusty all but guaranteed that by deciding to play the second half of his collegiate career elsewhere.
