NCAA Basketball: 10 best transfers from the 2017-18 season
JR Cam Johnson – North Carolina Tar Heels
2017-18 stats: 12.7 ppg 4.7 rpg 2.3 apg
When Pittsburgh had their first exodus of players under now former head coach Kevin Stallings, Johnson was the must-have player.
He was a 6’8 sharpshooter who could play the small or power forward positions. The former Panther also represents a brand new kind of transfer in that he graduated early, meaning that he had two years left of eligibility.
The very top schools wanted him, with North Carolina beating out Kentucky for his services. But the Tar Heels had to wait before he could play, nursing a shoulder injury from the off-season.
His arrival was big for the team, who lacked a true power forward, with the young bigs struggling to get on the court for many minutes. Johnson was the stretch forward, who at times exploited big mismatches, including hitting six three-pointers and totaling 32 points against Clemson.
His shoulder injury had an impact on him, with his shooting from deep slipping from 42% to 34%. He also was playing a different position, which changed his offensive game somewhat.
But with North Carolina adding some depth in the frontcourt, Johnson will return to his natural position, and likely have a big final year.
