SR Monty Boykins – Pittsburgh Panthers

2017-18 stats: 1.4 ppg 0.5 rpg 0.1 apg

After missing nearly all of the 2016-17 season with Lafayette University, Boykins decided to leave with his final year of eligibility. He had only one season where he averaged more than 4.7 ppg, so the wise decision would’ve probably been to stay with a mid-major where minutes were available.

But he elected to go to Pittsburgh, who was undergoing a complete roster overhaul after many graduations and transfers of their own. Many transfers at the time were declining the Panthers’ offers, so there was clearly room for Boykins. Made sense, with an opportunity to play for a power conference team with minutes available.

But the reality was that he wasn’t a player who was going to get playing time. Kevin Stallings from the beginning must have realized this, playing Boykins just four minutes in the season-opener. He played just 113 total minutes, with his best performance coming against Georgia Tech, where he scored nine points in 15 minutes, both season-highs.

This was a bust from both sides of the equation. Pittsburgh wasted a scholarship on a player who wasn’t good enough for the team, no matter how devoid of talent. And Boykins played little on a team who went winless in conference play. Just wasn’t a good decision.
