JR Kory Holden – South Carolina Gamecocks

2017-18 stats (11 games played): 3.4 ppg 1.3 rpg 1.5 apg

After scoring nearly 18 ppg at Delaware a couple of years ago, Holden was tasked with leading a revamped Gamecocks perimeter in the SEC.

But the beginning of this season showed that he wasn’t going to be the star that I and others thought we would be. That led to the struggles for South Carolina as a team, due to the underwhelming guard play.

But the troubles for Holden was only starting. He’s been dealing with lower body issues for a while, and it finally caught up with him this winter. The junior missed 11 games in December with a hamstring injury, and after coming back in February, he ultimately decided to leave the team altogether.

It’s unfortunate that we never got to see him healthy for South Carolina, and see how good he would’ve been. For the Gamecocks, two years of a needed scholarship have been used up without giving it to another player. So this was an issue from all sides.

Holden still has a year left in college if he so chooses, and hopefully his health allows him to continue playing basketball. But as far as this season went for both him and the team, it was a failure.
