6. Florida State Seminoles 23-12 (9-9)

2017-18 postseason results: NCAA Tournament Elite Eight

Season Grade: A

From a talent standpoint, the 2016-17 squad was a vastly superior team compared to this one, with a few NBA caliber players. The season might not have any, but was much more of a “team” this time around.

What they lacked in talent, the Seminoles made up for in size (both physically and in numbers) and athleticism. They grew as the season went along, making them much tougher down the road for opponents.

5. Syracuse Orange 23-14 (8-10)

2017-18 postseason result: NCAA Tournament Sweet Sixteen

Season Grade: A-

Say what you want about Jim Boeheim, but this season was just another reminder all how great of a coach he really is. The team basically had six rotation players, with only three of them who could score more than five points in a given game.

Teams knew exactly what Syracuse would do on both offense and defense, yet still couldn’t solve them. That includes the three really good shooting teams who faced the Orange in the Big Dance.

Whether they deserved the at-large bid or not, Syracuse yet again took advantage of it and made a run. Turned out to be a really good year for them.

4. North Carolina Tar Heels 26-11 (11-7)

2017-18 postseason result: NCAA Tournament Second Round

Season Grade: B

North Carolina lost a ton of talent from their national championship team, yet still had plenty leftover to make a run this time around. But the weaknesses they had were exposed at times, including against a big frontcourt in Texas A&M.

The expectations for the Tar Heels are Sweet Sixteen and more every year, and they were unable to accomplish that. But that is part of the life of a blue blood.
