How does BYU replace Bryant?

With the leading scorer on the Cougars now gone, that leaves the starting wing position wide open for the taking. There are four players who will compete for minutes at this spot, with different abilities.

First, there’s Rylan Bergerson, who was the only freshman on the roster this past season. He essentially rode the bench but did play well in the few opportunities he was given. He shot the ball well and uses his 6’6 frame on defense to cause problems for his opponents.

Then there is a pair of former top-100 prospects in Connor Harding and Gavin Baxter, both who’ll be coming off of two-year missions. These are great athletes, who like to slash to the hole. Depending on when they arrive home, as well as how good they are in fall camps, it’s unlikely that either will start out the gate. But that could easily change down the road in the season.

The likeliest starter has to be Zac Seljaas, who after shooting 50% from deep his freshman season, went all the way down to just 30% this past year. In fairness to him, he was recovering from a shoulder injury that caused him to come home early from his mission, as well as dealing with a new offense that didn’t suit him.

However, he also just missed many point-blank open shots, and never got into a rhythm. Assuming he’s healthy, Seljaas will get the first crack. But it will also be a very short leash too.
