NCAA Basketball: Impact of Romeo Langford’s looming decision
What a commitment would mean for the Jayhawks
Short story short, Kansas would be one of, it not the favorite to win the 2019 National Championship. And unlike last year’s limited depth, they could go 10-deep and not lose much from a talent perspective.
If Bill Self gets Langford, he could have an all-freshmen starting lineup with top-20 incoming recruits Devon Dotson and Quentin Grimes already coming in. It’ll be a big departure from the experience Kansas usually had with leaders such as Frank Mason and Devonte’ Graham at the helm.
Where the impact will really be felt is with the transfers who had to sit out at some point. It was the reason why the rotations were so short throughout the year.
Before these recruits committed, four high-touted transfers had to sit out. They include Sam Cunliffe from Arizona State, Charlie Moore from Cal, and KJ and Dedric Lawson from Memphis. Three of these four play alongside the perimeter, so Langford’s arrival will have a big impact on their projected minutes.
Cunliffe, in particular, could end up buried on the bench, as he played little in the ladder half of the past season. Coach Self will go from asking a football player to suit up for his team, to probably asking a former top-50 high school prospect to be a glorified cheerleader.
Next: Where will Romeo Langford end up?
At some point or another, each of these three teams was considered a favorite to land Langford. That means that it’s up in the air as to where he’ll go. But one thing is for sure – one team and a fan base is about to be very happy, while the other two will be back to the recruiting board for the next great prospect.
