After having tremendous success in the Mountain West, the Cougars have hit a brick wall with Gonzaga in the WCC. But the program who’s been the most competitive with the Bulldogs has been Rose and BYU, who pulled off the impressive feat of three straight wins in the Kennel.
Rose has to deal with a variety of factors that hurts the basketball program, including Mormon missions and the school itself. But still, BYU has maintained themselves to be an upper-echelon program in college basketball thanks to Rose’s ability to win as many games as possible.
3. Bob McKillop – Davidson Wildcats

Best result: Elite Eight with Davidson in 2008

Unlike other mid-majors who have some resemblance of a recruiting ground, the Wildcats pretty much get the scraps from the power conferences in the state of North Carolina.
After dominating the Southern Conference, McKillop and the program moved to a much better Atlantic 10, yet still gets 20 wins a season. As a program, Davidson has been a surprising mid-major success story, thanks to McKillop.
