Minnesota added one of the best available grad-transfers, Brock Stull. How does the former Milwaukee guard fit with the Golden Gophers’ roster?

Minnesota desperately needed to add a veteran to their perimeter rotation and Milwaukee transfer Brock Stull fits perfectly with their current roster.  Stull is a 6’4” combo guard who averaged 13.4 ppg, 4.8 rpg, and 3.1apg as a junior in the Horizon League.

He is a good three-point shooter (38%), but he can also put the ball on the floor and create offense. Stull is not a great athlete, but he is able to change speeds and use his craftiness to get into the lane and finish.

He will provide depth at both guard positions and should see over 20 minutes per game in a sixth man role. Rising sophomore Isaiah Washington is the favorite to start at PG, but if he struggles Stull could earn an even bigger role and take on more responsibility.

The only other perimeter reserves are 3-star freshman shooter Gabe Kalscheur and combo forward Michael Hurt (3.2ppg) which shows Minnesota’s need for a proven veteran like Stull. The Golden Gophers were fortunate to get such a good fit this late in the process.

While he only has one season of eligibility, Minnesota has two sit out transfer guards who will replace Stull and starting SG Dupree McBrayer next year (19-20). Pitt transfer Marcus Carr is the biggest name and will likely start while Vanderbilt transfer Payton Willis will bolster the bench.

Coach Richard Pitino did an excellent job plugging holes on this roster for both this year and next year during the Spring signing period. It was imperative that he address these needs because another losing season could put his job in jeopardy.

Hopefully, a seasoned veteran like Stull can give Minnesota the boost they need to return to the NCAA Tournament. After a disastrous injury-plagued meltdown last season, Minnesota needs to turn things around quickly. This will not be an easy task in a deep and balanced Big Ten Conference.
